Slicing Software

You can find information about Cura LulzBot Edition, print profiles for various settings and materials, and information about a more advanced alternative program named Slic3r on this page. In general, we recommend Cura LulzBot Edition as it contains the slicing software, printer host, and is easier for new users.

What is Slicing Software?

Slicing software converts your 3-Dimensional model (typically STL/OBJ) and determines the 3D printer toolpath based on the options selected. It uses the nozzle diameter, printing/movement speeds, layer height, and other variables to determine the coordinates where it needs to move, and the rates at which it will do so.

This information is exported out of the program as a .gcode file. The resulting .gcode file is a plain-text file with a series of GCODE commands, and a list of the complete X,Y, and Z axis coordinates used for printing the 3D model.
